Holiday Looks

Holiday makeup is allowed to go where everyday makeup wouldn’t dare. Bold and demanding attention, the eyes can be laden in splashes of color and glimmer that border on theatrical. For an attention-getting holiday look, you can wear it.

Mercier

A glittery holiday look is a dark eyeliner with a white, or metallic shimmer eye shadow extended up to the brow line. Laura Mercier Metallic Creme Eye Colour comes in 8 gorgeous glowing shades and is an Allure magazine Best of Beauty pick for 2006.

For eyeliner, go darker and bolder than you normally do. Define those eyes; if you ever wanted to line the whole eye including the lower lid, this is the time to do it. Extend the eyeliner and smudge a bit into the corner of the eye as well. Go ahead and wear those false eyelashes. Brush brows and use a gel color to define and set them.

Perfume Art

It’s Wednesday. We are halfway through the work week, and if you are like me, needing a break. So I am taking one today and I am not going to talk about the best way to apply eyeliner or the newest advances in lipstick. Today I am going to tell you about my secret obsession: perfume bottles.

I am definitely the kind who might buy a perfume just for the pleasure of having the bottle sit upon my shelf or dressing table. I seldom indulge because collecting perfume bottles could turn into an expensive habit especially if you find you don’t care for the fragrance they contain.

Perfume designers put just as much creative energy into the packaging of their product as they do the scent itself. Some perfume bottles could be considered works of art. For instance, how about Dali Style by Salvadore Dali?

Kingdom by Alexander McQueen, with its crystal heart turned upside-down makes a statement all its own.

I love the sporty and fun patterns of the Burberrys Brit perfumes - set on a blocky bottle they tell you: this fragrance is for someone adventurous and fun, but grounded and practical. I like the Burberry Brit Red and Burberry Brit Gold bottles too.

Brit

Angel by Thierry Mugler is elegant and delicate, a crystalline object from the heavens. Choosing just one of Thierry Mugler’s bottles would be a problem, they are all so interesting in their design.

These are my yearnings for this morning. I wonder if Santa is reading this?

Casual Friday

Many offices these days have “Casual Friday”. Employers relax the dress code a bit and allow more casual clothing as office wear. Instead of your power suit, you toss on your favorite jeans and casual shirt and spend the day in comfort. But what about your makeup?

Just because it’s “casual” Friday doesn’t mean you want to look as if you just rolled out of bed, but full-tilt makeup may look out of place with your casual attire. Here are some tips for looking great but not out of place.

Foundation: Use a light, sheer base to even out skin tones and hide blotchiness. Choose the shade that most nearly matches your own skin color.

Blush: Definitely a day for looking healthy but not made-up. Lightly brush some color over the apples of your cheeks for a little healthy glow but don’t overdo.

Eyes: If you use shadow, make it neutral. It’s okay to push a little into the crease to make your eyes look deeper but don’t go for a dramatic look. To keep your makeup simple and quick, you can let your blush double as an eyeshadow. Use eyeliner only if your lashes are sparse and eyes need the definition and even then, top lid only. Definitely use mascara to define lashes and open the eyes.

Lips: Bright red will scream and be out of place with your casual look. Go for lighter shades or try something neutral. Use a liplining pencil to apply color to your whole lip and top with an application of clear gloss for lip color that doesn’t need constant reapplication and won’t wear off.
