Tone Down The Red

When you think of green makeup you probably think of Frankenstein’s monster, but there are times when you might consider using green-tinted makeup on your face (and no, it’s not on Halloween).

Rosa

Brenda Christian’s Rosacea Eraser

Your regular concealer is no match for red splotchy patches, blemishes or acne. You need to apply a color corrective under your foundation to hide the angry red and give yourself a flawless and even skin tone. A concealer with a green tint will correct the redness. Apply over the blemish, then apply your foundation. You can even apply the concealer again over your foundation and blend for a more complete coverage.

If the problem is more than a few blemishes with red splotches or rosacea (see our article on rosacea) then a product specifically designed for rosacea will be more effective.

Brenda Christian’s Rosacea Eraser is a multi-toned powder of Italian pigments micro-filled with Jojoba and Vitame E. It will neutralize red tones and soothe and protect skin.

Oatmeal for Dry Skin

If you are like me, the drier and colder weather is already starting to take a toll on your skin in the form of dryness. If left unchecked, dry skin can become flaky, itchy and irritated with tiny cracks that allow even further drying of skin or irritation by everyday chemicals. It’s time to do something naturally good for your extra dry skin before the damage occurs.

Aveeno

The healing power of oatmeal soaks for dry skin has been known for over 400 years. AVEENO takes natural colloidal oatmeal and combines it with rich emollients to cleanse, soothe and moisturize. The oatmeal relieves the itch of dry skin and leaves behind a protective barrier to keep moisture in.

I recommend AVEEN0 Soothing Relief Bath Treatment or Skin Relief Body Wash to relieve dry skin and keep it healthy and moisturized all winter along.

Know Your Hair Type Needs

For years we were all told that we should wash our hair every day but lately beauty experts are rescinding that advice in favor of routines that are gentler to hair and geared specifically to hair types.

Hair

If your hair is very oily, you might get away with washing it daily, but chances are that most of that oil is near the roots and you are drying out the shaft and the ends of the hair. Brush hair from roots to ends to distribute oil evenly along the shaft. If oil at the roots is still a problem but the rest of the hair is dry, try using a dry shampoo. An inexpensive substitute is a little cornstarch or talcum powder on the roots. A good tip is to brush it out with a bit of nylon hose over the brush. Recycle old pantyhose that may have runs by cutting off the feet for this purpose.

If your hair is dry and brittle but you want to wash it before styling, try applying a conditioner prior to washing it with shampoo. This pre-conditioning will keep hair from drying out too much but you will still be able to wash away dirt and oils.

All hair types benefit from using styling products to smooth and moisturize hair prior to using hair dryers, curling irons or flat irons.

If hair is flyaway or frizzy after styling, use a smoothing product to tame it.

Waking Up a Tired Face

For most women today, life is busy and way overscheduled. Too many days and nights of burning the candle at both ends and too little sleep can result in puffy eyes and dark undereye circles.

Awake

To wake up the tired face and get the eyes ready to look out on another morning, end your morning cleansing routine with a refreshing toner. This will tighten pores, moisturize and revitalize your skin - leaving it ready for your makeup application.

For puffy eyes, one of my favorite products is Mary Kay’s Indulge Soothing Eye Gel. Keep this little pot of gel in the fridge and when you apply it to tired, puffy eyes they will immediately feel refreshed. The botanical formula reduces puffiness and improves the skin’s firmness and elasticity.

To hide dark circles, use a salmon or yellow-based concealer. Then just apply your foundation and usual makeup and you will feel and look alive!
